Re: "Are you a Burner?"
Sat, November 15, 2008 - 6:32 PMYeah, I love how everyone assumes I am....I love telling them otherwise. -

Re: "Are you a Burner?"
Sat, November 15, 2008 - 10:17 PMhow do you tell them without shoving them down on the ground?
i'm having a hard time controlling myself right now. -

Re: "Are you a Burner?"
Sun, November 16, 2008 - 10:34 AMI just gently say..."Oh no, I hate burning man. I can't stand being that dirty." that usually suffices. I also inform them that YES I have been....twice...(the 2nd time I was gifted a ticket...I only made it 2 days before leaving without saying good-bye or anything....just left...)
Burners always want it to seem like I didn't give it a chance.
I usually focus on bashing it for the hygiene/ dirt/ portopotties issue. Then I'll mention the money and time off, and how it's cheaper to go to Hawaii. I'll often move into the types of festivals I do like and where those are. If I'm continuously pushed, I start into the cult of BM.
It's a natural progression. -

Re: "Are you a Burner?"
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 12:07 AMmaybe i should start telling them that i've been and it just wasn't for me.
my arguments don't hold much water since i have never been there.
I get remarks like, "it's only a matter of time before you cave..."
as if it's the inevitable destination/plight of every human being...as if we are all moving on a great conveyor belt toward the Playa, some faster than others, but all inevitably reaching the Playa as our final resting place.
well i think i succeeded in losing at least half of my "friends" with my last few blog entries. To be sure, i borrowed a classic Shatter vocabulary word, "Fucktard", to respond to one Burner who told me i am simple minded for not going to BM. -

Wed, November 19, 2008 - 2:14 PMi think that simple minded equals "heathen" when referring to someone who resists or refuses the light of salvation. -

Re: "Are you a Burner?"
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 2:36 PMWhy not just tell them that you really enjoy good hygiene and don't want to get that dirty? I always go back to the "I hate dirt and portopotties" rationale. Plus, it's cheaper to fly to Hawaii then it is to go to BM. I always state that I have no paid vacations, and therefore prefer to spend my meagerly saving going places where the weather is pleasant. Why is it mandatory to spend your whole vacation load getting filthy in the god-forsaken playa? It costs a min. of $1K to go to BM after you factor in tickets, ruined camping gear, ruined costumes, food, and art...that's not even including time off! -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: "Are you a Burner?"
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 4:29 PMcuz my peeps have seen me get dirty plenty of times. Maybe not nearly that dirty or stinky, but i doubt i'm known as a fussy type who won't let herself get smelly. I guess i keep that aspect hidden...but as soon as i can smell myself, i do something about it.
So much of what i'm about resonates with Burner philosophy. I just abhor labels, especially ones that evoke smelly, debaucherous trysts in extreme weather conditions, fueled on beer and bacon. The people in my city who i still honor as friends are the ones who have been to BM (some of them up to 9 times) and still don't call themselves Burners, ever. -

Re: "Are you a Burner?"
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 6:49 PMI LOVE the conveyor belt analogy. I struggle with this too.
Though much less since going to the East Coast! The freaks just don't care. Well, at least most of them don't. There are some brainwashed idiots here too, but they're not anywhere near as ubiquitous.

Re: "Are you a Burner?"
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 9:22 PMI've expounded my gripes so many times about why BM stinks.
Mostly, it's the 30,000 dickholes that caravan out there who are there because "WOOO!!! IT'S BURNING MAN!!!"
Also, I refuse to support Larry Harvey. He can go eat a dick.
I like the art idea, but why do we have to do art only in the middle of the desert where only those that can afford to go out there, and buy a ticket can see it.
Hell, I've NEVER paid money to go to an art galley, and I've paid i think $15 to go see an art exhibit.
The only thing burners care about is non stop techno and doing drugs. I'm not into either one of these things.
I also don't care to go party with people that the other 51 weeks out of the year I'm throwing them out of nightclubs for being fucktards.
